My love song for the mounatains of Chaytopec, Oaxaca, Mexico

Watch a short video of our 2008 journey to Oaxaca on youtube. For more info on the Wisdom of the Moutains trip click here.

Through the generosity of Just Us! Coffee Roasters I was included on one of these trips in Jan of '08. It was a tremendous experience. An amazing journey high into the mountains of Oaxaca, to the tiny coffee growing community of Chayotepec.  We slept in thatched roof cabanas perched on the edge of the mountain side. The sunrises were amazing with the mountain ranges stretching two hundred and fifty miles south to the Pacific. The people of Chayotepec were warm and generous. The food simple and wonderful, cooked on a clay, metal topped stove.  We picked coffee, made cheese and tortillas, shared stories and music, and even milked cows! When we left Chayotepec we drove the winding mountain roads down to sea level and then onto the Pacific coast . At the end of our journey we plunged ourselves in to her warm salty waters , drank cold Corona and feasted on galicky shrimp. In the city of Oaxaca we slept in a beautiful colonial hotel, wandered the local and tourist markets, watched the street performers and musicians from our tables in the Zocalo cafes. This is a trip that will leave you with a sense of wonder, a deeper understanding of one of the coffee growing communities of southern Mexico...... and perhaps like me you will fall in love with the beautiful mountains of Oaxaca.
